Iron Clad

Hey Fellas,

Well, the reason for this forum is that we can discuss topics at our leisure, throughout the month. Please feel free to pose any questions. To begin, however, I'd like to tag onto Josh's topic of the media:

Do you feel any media pressure to conform to a facade? What is the facade? What is the pressure? What about this action, attitude, or mentality (facade) is problematic?

  • Whoa, this just struck me as something totally great! I can think about the Iron Clad topics in little micro-portions. I can mull over a topic for a while and post comments/thoughts as they hit me. I like the possibilities.

No comments yet on your actual topic.

  • Yes, that is the idea. Hopefully people take to it. If interesting questions come up in our comments, we can post those individually as well.

This way Iron Clad becomes ever-interactive.

  • So, are you asking if the media is making us someone we are not?

  • I was in Chicago this past weekend and I stopped into a few stores along the "Magnificent Mile" stretch on Michigan Avenue. I actually saw a pair of jeans - regular jeans - I mean, I have better pairs of jeans than this pair I saw - and it was OVER $500. Almost everything that I saw that was kind of cool was multiple hundreds if not thousands of dollars (for spring jackets and whatnot).

This pulled my thoughts into a lot of directions. Who pays that much for this mediocre stuff? Why do they pay it? Then the worst thing happened. I dream really big. Sorry, I do. I expect myself to surprise myself and get very wealthy someday. So, the next question I asked myself was this:

"When will I be able to afford this stuff?" I don't know why I thought it. As if I'd spend that kind of ridiculous money on stuff that is no better than average clothing. Yet, because I couldn't have it and these were the stores right people could purchase from - I wanted to as well.

I can't believe I let myself get sucked into that thought pattern!

  • stores right people could purchase from should say "rich people".

    That's an odd typing error...

  • Yes, it is me Cheryl; Good Evening.

Tagging onto what you said J; I think I get into the same thought pattern when I get into the home improvement mode. I think about granite countertops and marble floors and stainless steel...

My kitchen is functional, and it serves a purpose. There are people in other countries who survive on one hundred dollars a year! What in the world!

I think it almost could be called brainwashing. It's not like we should sew our own clothes and churn our own butter, but we certainly could do with less. Sometimes I buy things that have nothing to do with convenience, just with greed.

    How do we overcome this?
