Waking the Dead

Well, most of the men involved with this group are reading Waking the Dead by John Eldredge, already. This group is not scheduled to take on another book until November, but it is logical that, since we are reading the book, we begin to discuss the principles within the book. We should not pick up books just for the sake of the fuzzy feeling, they should be to change us. So, let's make this our focus for Iron Clad.

First Chapter:
Jesus promised us LIFE, and life to the full. We must fight for life.

Second Chapter:
Three important Principles:
1. Things are not what they seem
2. We are at war
3. Our role is to give God glory

Third Chapter:
It's all about the heart. The analogy is to the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz (specifically the book). We know the Tin man has sacrificed his humnity (his heart) in order to be efficient, thus giving up his ability to love. He, therefore, will ask the Wizard for a heart.

Please comment as you will on any of the above chapters/topics.

  • Mike and I discussed parts of Waking the Dead at our camping trip over the weekend. The story of the tin man was especially impacting as it caught him by surprise. He was slowly becoming a more efficient worker until suddently he lost his heart and no longer loved the woman he was doing all of that work for. He didn't even care that he got to that point. Only by rusting solid did he have over a year to think about things and finally realize that he missed his heart. The heart that his enemy stole from him.

  • this was such an impacting story. men know part of their duty is to work efficiently, so they strive to do so. please guard your hearts, men, so as not to lose them in the process of fulfilling the duty of work. your first priority is your heart - "love your wife as jesus loves the church".

  • It's difficult also to focus your heart on God's plan, while also attempting to work as efficiently as possible. At times it is difficult to say, "well I'm working hard but not for God..." because it offends our pride.

In general, I work my hardest. However, there are times when I stop to question my actions, "is that really what God would have wanted me to do...?"

  • I don't know if I'm intereted or not, but I'm very interested in this book. It's one of the best non-fiction book I have read (so far) with lots of application to my life. I don't want to make every post...but I do want to spur some enthusiasm towards reading this book.

  • You will not be the only poster - we are a minority of two, plus anonymous people...lol... they are afraid to reveal themselves

  • ps. we are finally meeting at Jason's house...lol. However, I can not be specific about the location for all the internet stalkers that would want to track Jason or myself down (you can tell by his picture that he is an attractive male)

  • O, and fake kelmo, we actually like to call it spandex. Let's at least be serious - this is a MEN's group. Not a ladies group.
